Hoyas Offense Grinding To Halt Without Chris Wright

Feb 27, 2011 4:03 PM

Chris Wright, starting point guard for the 11th ranked Hoyas, broke his left hand on Wednesday in a 58-46 loss to Cincinnati.

Wright’s absence was apparent in Georgetown’s 58-51 loss to Syracuse as the Hoyas missed 32 of its 50 shots, including 11 of its 12 attempts after taking a two-point lead with 10 minutes 2 seconds in the game.

The Hoyas' 36 percent field goal percentage was their second worst this season; the 25 percent effort in Wednesday's loss to Cincinnati was the worst of coach John Thompson III’s tenure. Without Wright running the point, the Hoyas have looked out of sorts offensively.

“At points, we were holding the ball a little bit too long, looking for something," said guard Austin Freeman.

Notre Dame Overcomes Matchup Zone, Beats Seton Hall 60-48

Feb 27, 2011 3:58 PM

Notre Dame shot 39.6 percent in its second-worst showing at home all season.

Confounded by Seton Hall's matchup zone, the Irish shot 32 percent in the first half — a low at home and the worst first-half effort since late November, but bounced back behind a 13-0 burst early in the second half to erase Seton Hall's 11-point lead for good.

Similar inconsistency won't suffice against Villanova on Monday, nor in the postseason. The message just happened to arrive in some nice wrapping.

"Human nature is human nature," Irish coach Mike Brey mused. "Maybe we learned a lesson inexpensively."

Seton Hall Dismisses Pair Of Seniors

Feb 12, 2011 6:23 PM

Seton Hall senior guards Keon Lawrence and Jamel Jackson have been dismissed from the team, effective immediately, the school announced on Saturday afternoon.

The dismissals are "due to a violation of team rules and an ongoing pattern of conduct unbecoming of a representative of Seton Hall athletics," read a statement released by the school.

Lawrence has been in trouble before. In November 2009, he was charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license after he was involved in a two-car accident because he was driving on the wrong side of the Garden State Parkway.

Walker Helps No. 6 UConn Escape Against Seton Hall

Feb 6, 2011 9:40 AM

No. 6 Connecticut trailed Seton Hall by 10 points with eight minutes to play on Saturday, but Kemba Walker helped the team escape a potential upset.

Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said he challenged his team numerous times on the sidelines.

"I did challenge them on the sidelines a couple of times, really challenged them about what they were doing or not doing and the effort they were not giving," Calhoun said. "I didn't want to hear a damn excuse -- I didn't use that word exactly. 'I hear one excuse and I will put you on the bench so hard that you'll still be here when we come back here next year. This game is winnable.' And then they did it."

Connecticut closed the game on a 15-3 run to overcome the big deficit and win 61-59, their 11th consecutive win over Seton Hall.

Walker finished with 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting. He hit a three-pointer with 2:32 to play that capped a 12-1 run and gave the Huskies their first lead of the second half.
